Sweden's 'rot month' begins
According to Bondepraktikan, Sweden's country almanac, we are now at the start of the so-called "rot month" or rötmånaden, when food becomes mouldy or goes bad particularly quickly.
The almanac says that rötmånaden starts between July 22nd and 24th and continues up until August 22nd to 24th.
According to Ellen Edgren, head of the advice and regulation division at the Swedish Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket), however, the exact period depends on the weather.
"The rotting period has no fixed start or end: it can cover the entire summer if it's really warm and humid," she told the TT newswire.
Animal products like milk, meat and fish are most affected by the heat, but high humidity can also lead to mould growing on dry goods like bread, and on fruit or vegetables.
Edgren recommends keeping bread frozen in portion-sized amounts in the freezer, and drying off vegetables before placing them in the fridge.

Surge in food prices expected after European heatwave
The extreme heat seen in Europe this summer has done an estimated 20 billion kronor in damage to crops and other food produced in Europe, which is likely to lead to a jump in food prices over the coming months, the Dagens Nyheter newspaper has reported.
"It's not at all impossible that we get a price shock similar to the one we had in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine," Helena Hansson, economics professor at the Swedish Agricultural University (SLU), told the newspaper.
Cereals like wheat and barley are the most affected crops, which is likely to lead to higher prices for bread, pasta, muesli, oats and flour.
As cereals are also used to feed animals, in the longer term the heatwave will also push up prices of pork, eggs, milk and beef, Hansson added.
