Swedish word of the day: språköra

If you’ve developed a good grasp of Swedish or other languages, don’t be surprised if someone compliments you on your ‘language ear’.

Språköra is a compound word made up of the word for language, språk, and ear, öra. It literally translates as a "language ear", and is used to compliment someone’s ability to learn, understand and speak languages.

Someone with a good "language ear" will not only pick up the basics but also nail the trickier aspects, such as accent and intonation.

Therefore, if you have a Swedish språköra, you will probably be able to tell regional dialects apart. Things like grammar probably also come a lot easier.

A person with a good ear for languages is also adept at getting a grip on new languages.

When it comes to having a good language ear yourself, it can be a good mix of natural gifts and hard work.

If you’ve already put in the work and learned one additional language, then picking up others should be easier. This is especially true if the new language you are learning has a lot in common with the one you already speak.

You're more likely to be complimented on your språköra when speaking a language – for example if your pronunciation or accent is particularly good – rather than when writing.

Swedish has a large number of vowel sounds relative to other languages, as well as other distinctive sounds like the whooshing "sh" sound seen in words like sjuksköterska, which can easily expose you as a non-Swede no matter how grammatically correct your speech is.

Having said that, Swedish is considered to be one of the easiest languages for English speakers to learn, due to its relatively close proximity to English.

Example sentences:

Din svenska är jättebra, vilket språköra du har!

Your Swedish is really good, what an ear for languages you have!

Jag har ett bra språköra så det var lätt att lära mig svenska.

I have a good ear for languages so it was easy to learn Swedish.
