Trains cancelled as torrential rain and gale-force winds batter Sweden

Trains have been cancelled on several routes as torrential rain and strong winds continue to batter large parts of Sweden on Tuesday.

According to the forecast, the severe weather was expected to move into Värmland after lunch and continue south-east across the country.

SMHI issued a yellow warning for torrential rain covering large parts of Värmland, western Örebro and the northernmost parts of Västra Götaland from lunchtime onwards. This could mean 35 to 70 millimetres of rain in a short space of time in some areas, with a chance of thunder.

"Locally, there is a risk of serious consequences," Erik Höjgård-Olsen, a meteorologist for national weather agency SMHI, told the TT newswire.

Additionally, two yellow warnings for wind are in place for the afternoon and into the evening.

One covers large parts of the west coast and Skåne, while the other stretches from Skaraborg down towards the northern parts of Kalmar.

"It's really the same issue in all three areas, namely that we are expecting heavy showers and strong gusts of wind," said Höjgård-Olsen. "However, we still believe that in the area north of Lake Vänern, it is the rain rather than the wind that is likely to cause problems. And the reverse is true over Götaland."

SMHI has also issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall and thunder over Gotland, running from 10pm until 4am on Wednesday.

Due to the storm, the Swedish Transport Administration is raising its readiness levels in several regions and warning of the risk of flooded roads, fallen trees, and disruptions to road and rail traffic. Road users are urged to stay alert, monitor traffic updates, and adapt their speed to the road conditions.

As a result of the high winds, trains have been cancelled on several routes in Skåne and Blekinge until 5am on Wednesday, according to Swedish Radio’s traffic editorial team. This includes services between Helsingborg and Lund, as well as Kristianstad and Karlskrona.
