Sweden's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it will now use 'Kyjiv' for the Ukrainian capital

The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said it will stop using the name 'Kiev' for the capital of the Ukraine.

Sweden's embassy in the Ukraine will now be named the Embassy of Sweden in Kyiv, Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard said at the government's summer fika.

The name change to 'Kyjiv' aligns with Ukrainian practice: Kyjiv is the Swedish transliteration of the Ukrainian alphabet spelling.

"Changing the name form is a way to show our support for Ukraine," Malmer Stenergard said.

According to Malmer Stenergard, Ukraine has urged countries to change the name forms of Ukrainian cities and regions so that they are not connected to the "colonial" legacy from Russia.

The honourary Swedish consulate in Odessa will now be called the honorary consulate in Odesa. The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs will now also spell the Donbass region with an 's' going forward.

"We are countering Russian attempts to wipe out Ukrainian culture," said Malmer Stenergard.
