Swedish parliamentary speaker to announce next steps in government deadlock

Centre Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist is set to face a parliamentary confirmation vote to become Sweden's next prime minister, the speaker of parliament has announced.

Speaker Andreas Norlén confirmed the decision during a press briefing on Thursday.

"It is about keeping up the momentum in the process and gradually increasing the pressure on the parties to reach a solution, given that a snap election is drawing nearer," he said.

The Centre Party leader announced on Monday that she had been unable to secure backing for a centrist coalition government led by Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson.

The vote on Thand Ringqvist will mark the second prime ministerial ballot since the election. Two weeks ago, Andersson was rejected by parliament after failing to cobble together a viable government.

INTERVIEW: What would it take for Sweden's Centre Party to back Ulf Kristersson as PM?

Thand Ringqvist herself took to X to comment on the speaker's decision.

"My mandate was never about becoming prime minister myself, but rather exploring the feasibility of a centrist government led by Magdalena Andersson. We had therefore considered it natural for the speaker to either propose Magdalena Andersson as prime minister now or grant Ulf Kristersson the mandate to explore options," she wrote.

She added that she has nonetheless agreed to be put forward as a prime ministerial candidate for a centrist coalition consisting of the Centre Party, the Social Democrats, the Christian Democrats, the Green Party and the Liberals – a constellation which has previously been rejected by several of the parties involved.

After the vote, which will take place on Tuesday, the speaker will have two attempts left to put a prime ministerial candidate to a vote in parliament before a new election has to be held.

If Thand Ringqvist is voted down, which is likely, Moderate leader Ulf Kristersson will be tasked with attempting to form a government and will be given one week to do so, according to Norlén.

ANALYSIS: What does Centre Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist really want?

When asked why it took him three days to reach this decision, the speaker replied:

"We find ourselves in a rather intricate political situation, which required several rounds of talks to arrive at this solution."

Whether Kristersson will himself face a prime ministerial vote after he concludes his task of forming a government remains unclear.

"If he has not succeeded, it would be natural before moving to the third vote for me to consult with the red-green bloc. But that is still quite a way off," said Norlén.
