Christian Democrats want Sweden to explore third-country deportations

The Christian Democrats believe that Sweden should explore the possibility of deporting people to countries other than their home countries.

The party, a member of the current caretaker governing Tidö coalition, outlined their position on third-country deportations in their "Security Report" (Trygghetsrapport), released last week.

According to the proposal, Sweden should investigate the possibility of establishing new cooperation agreements with "host countries" which are not the individuals' home countries.

From there, the deported person would be able to travel on to their home country or "find another country for permanent residence."

The Christian Democrats describe a long-standing problem of people who have received a deportation order from Sweden yet cannot be deported because their home countries refuse to accept them.

The party notes that this results in many people being placed in special accommodation and left in limbo for years.

The related idea of establishing "return hubs" – facilities in non-EU countries where people can be held pending return to their home countries – was described by Sweden Democrat spokesperson Ludvig Aspling's "number one favourite reform," in The Local's pre-election interview with him.
