Sweden's Social Democrat leader promises to "heal country" in key speech

At her leader speech last night during Almedalen Week, Sweden's annual political festival on the island of Gotland, Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson said she is concerned about where the country is heading under the current government.

"An icy wind has blown through Sweden," Andersson said to a crowd of approximately 3,600. "We risk becoming a colder country. Harder. I get so many messages about it."

Andersson highlighted xenophobia and anti-Semitism in particular, which she said affects not only individual citizens but the entire community.

She pointed particularly to the rhetoric of the Sweden Democrats, saying that it is divisive (she used the Swedish phrase gör ”skillnad på människa och människa” which roughly means to divide people into different categories) and warned of what will happen if the far-right party becomes the largest party in the next government.

"The next government that takes office needs to heal our country," she said, and went on to specify, "step by step, confront extremism, Islamism and anti-Semitism. And let me be crystal clear. I will not back down. I love our country too much for that."

She emphasised a message of building up Sweden and strengthening social unity.

"Our greatness lies in everyday life. That we built all this together. Stone by stone. A society where we rejoice in each other's successes and support each other when things are tough."

She also paid tribute to Sweden's World Cup team, who played Japan later that night (7pm in Texas, where the match was held), opening and closing her speech with reference to them.

She wrapped her speech by saying that behind the players’ successes were many good conditions, including Sweden’s welfare system, which gave them the opportunity to develop their talent.

"It's not just eleven fantastic guys taking to the field tonight. It's a whole social model. It's a way of life. It's Sweden!" she said.
